The European Commission has announced that it is considering postponing the entry into application of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year, until December 2026.
The reason? The official IT system — designed to process due diligence statements and transactions across the EU — may not be ready to handle the expected scale of operations without risking major disruptions.
At first glance, this delay offers companies more time to prepare. But make no mistake: the compliance obligations remain unchanged. Whether the system goes live in 2025 or 2026, operators will still need robust due diligence processes covering legality, geolocation, and deforestation-free requirements.
The postponement is not a “pause” on compliance, but an opportunity to strengthen your systems and partnerships before the regulation takes full effect.
However, it is important to note: this postponement has not yet been officially confirmed. Until the legislative process is complete, the original date of 30 December 2025 remains in place.
